Alleged crime boss denied bail over drug and firearms charges

Fadi Haddara, the man police allege heads an organised crime syndicate, has been denied bail after a magistrate highlighted concerns over potential offending and contacting prosecution witnesses. Mr Haddara, 36, faces 17 charges including drug trafficking, possessing firearms and intentionally causing serious injury after he and two dozen others were arrested in police raids across more than 40 Melbourne properties in March. Mr Haddara blew a kiss and waved to family members as he was led out of Melbourne Magistrates Court after being denied bail in an application that began 11 days ago. But his lawyer, Zarah Garde-Wilson, told Fairfax Media she would lodge an application for bail with the Supreme Court later on Friday. Magistrate Margaret Harding acknowledged it could be two years before there was a final verdict on the charges against Mr Haddara, and that he had previously spent more than 300 days on remand on unrelated offences, only to be acquitted.
