*Manchester*: Italy full-back Matteo Darmian is expected to leave English Premier League (EPL) giants Manchester United football club as his relationship with head coach Jose Mourinho is at a 'complete breakdown, according to a Tuttosport report.

The Italian joined United in 2015 from Torino, and soon became a regular member of the first team.

He started 15 games at right-back under Louis van Gaal in the EPL last season, and only eight players featured for more league minutes.

But he has fallen down the pecking order since the appointment of Mourinho as manager at Old Trafford.

According to the report, his relationship with the new boss has suffered a ‘complete breakdown'. Mourinho has entrusted Antonio Valencia with the role of right-back this season, with the Ecuadorean having previously spent most of his time on the fringes of the squad.

It is believed that the manager's decision to demote Darmian has angered the Italian, who could now look to move.

*New York:* German Angelique Kerber will become the new women's singles World No.1 replacing long-standing incumbent American Serena Williams when updated rankings are released on Monday, September 12.

"Congratulations to Angelique on this remarkable accomplishment of becoming the WTA World No.1," said Women's Tennis Association (WTA) CEO Steve Simon according to wtatennis.com on Thursday.

"It is extremely difficult to reach the pinnacle of our sport, and Angelique has demonstrated amazing work ethic in the past year. Her outstanding results reflect this, and she truly deserves to be the new WTA World No.1."

The 28-year-old becomes only the second German woman to achieve this historic milestone since computer rankings were introduced in 1975, and the first since Steffi Graf spent the last of her record 377 weeks at No.1 in March 1997.

She is also the oldest player to make her debut at No.1, a record previously held by Jennifer Capriati, who was 25 years, 200 days when she reached No.1 in October 2001.

Kerber's rise to No.1 brings to an end the reign of Serena Williams, whose sixth stint in the top spot began more than three years ago, on February 18, 2013.

At 186 consecutive weeks, the American's most recent stay at No.1 ties the Open Era record for most consecutive weeks at No.1 held by Graf. This is the 88th time the No.1 ranking has changed hands over the past four decades.

This accomplishment is the latest in what has been a breakout year for the German, who began the season by defeating Serena Williams to win her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, and followed up by advancing to the Wimbledon final, capturing a silver medal in singles at the Rio Olympicsand reaching the final at the ongoing US Open.

*Greater Noida:* Left-handed opening batsman Gautam Gambhir seems to have changed his batting stance. During the first two Duleep Trophy games, Gambhir who is leading the India Blue, took guard with a very visibly open-chested stance. Unlike the old stance where his right shoulder would face towards the bowler, now even the left one was visible.

*IPL experiment*
He first started batting like this during the last edition of the IPL – a change he has brought into his game after discussions with Australia's former batsman Justin Langer. Many former players who have followed Gambhir's career have pointed out that the new stance negates the away going deliveries that have troubled him. There have also been issues with balls pitching full and coming in as his front foot used to go a too far across, leading him to get either lbw or bowled.

The new stance in the IPL yielded results as Gambhir finished with 505 runs at an average of over 38 with five half-centuries. But in the first session on the first day of the first Duleep Trophy game on a green track, it looked like he was struggling initially. In fact, it was Gambhir's Delhi teammate and Red's left-arm seamer Pradeep Sangwan who exposed the chink when he appealed for lbw.

Sangwan's new ball partner Nathu Singh also troubled the opener inducing a mistimed pull shot but the catch was dropped. Former India pacer Vivek Razdan who was commentating when that happened, pointed out that Gambhir being a compulsive puller is likely to struggle with the stance as this one restricts his movement with him not covering the line of the deliveries aimed at his body and are rising.

*Razdan's view*
Razdan would also point out that on pitches where the seam bowlers get lateral movement, Gambhir could have issues reaching the pitch of ball, leaving a gap between his front foot and bat which could also result in him playing a lot more in the air rather than along the ground.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed it received 57 applicants for the post of Team India coach before Anil Kumble got the job a few months ago. The figure would be far more when they receive applications for selectors' posts, an initiative which was announced yesterday by BCCI president Anurag Thakur.

"We picked the National coach by inviting applications and conducting interviews. The process was transparent and I think the Board did a professional job in giving the responsibility to Anil Kumble," Thakur told The Hindu newspaper yesterday.

The latest move was welcomed by former India captain Chandu Borde, who was chairman of national selectors from 1984 to 1986 and then from 1999 to 2002.

"This initiative will negate favouritism while knowledgeable individuals will pick the selectors. Earlier, one could become a national selector even by playing a handful of first-class matches and favouritism was prevalent in some cases. Here, only the deserving will become selectors," Borde told mid-day from Pune.

Thakur insisted that this move of picking the selectors was not caused by the Lodha Committee recommendations. "Our review petition is pending with the Supreme Court, but I insist that this move is not because of anyone but the Board," he was quoted as saying.

Balwinder Singh Sandhu, the 1983 World Cupper, who applied for the coach's job, said he would throw his hat in the ring.

"I will certainly be keen on applying. I've watched cricket for so many years, have coached Ranji Trophy teams and have an eye for talent. I will never back any player with no potential. I don't compromise with anything where cricket is concerned. This system of selecting the selectors is a fine one. Now, there will be no give-and-take politicking which used to take place earlier and you don't need your association's backing for the job. Like the coaches' interviews, this is a very fair way to go about things," said Sandhu.

Milind Rege, Mumbai's chairman of senior selectors, ought to have been given a go as national selector considering his credentials and experience, but somehow was never picked. He led Mumbai when the star players were away in Australia during the 1977-78 season and has been a junior and senior selector for a good part of the last 32 years.
